Dear Katie,

First of all, that jaw drop of yours was hilarious!  I know you’re conditioned to hear “I don’t know” if the letters “D” and “r” come before a name, but realize where you are sitting.  This one knows what he’s doing.  Otherwise he wouldn’t have a job here.  For once in your life, trust a doctor.

Ok…still breathing? Good.

These next few months will be trying, but let’s get real – the last 16 years of your life have been trying.  I promise you, you can handle this.  It only gets better from here! You will meet some absolutely amazing people and you will never be alone.  You will grow more in these next few months than you have in the past 5 years combined.

  • You will learn that achievements do not define who you are: let go of vet school – Narcolepsy is here to stay.  You have plenty of other passions to pursue.
  • You will learn to forgive yourself when you don’t measure up to others.  You are leaps and bounds ahead of many in other areas of life.
  • You will realize that going at your own pace, while sometimes frustrating, is OK.  You will no longer feel like a failure.  You will create a new “normal” for you, and things will get easier.
  •  You will learn that prioritizing your health is not an option, but a necessity.

The journey you are about to start will introduce you to some of the most loving, caring, and motivated people you have ever met.  Some of the most incredible opportunities will find you – sometimes seemingly out of thin air.  And I know you hate clichés, but everything happens for a reason (I bet you never thought you’d hear yourself say that of all things!).  Everything you learned and experienced in getting to this moment, right here, will help you to be there for others.  So pick your jaw up off the floor and smile, because life only gets better from here.

Love,

Your future, happier self
