The View From Dreamworld

Did you know that the boundaries between dreaming and consciousness are broken down in the brains of people with narcolepsy? I experience my night dreams as real as reality. So during the day, I chase down my life dreams.

Current dreams I’m chasing: the steepest road race in America and my memoir.

Is it selfish to pursue dreams so young? Aren’t dreams for later? “Put it on the bucket list…”

“Don’t ask what the world needs.
Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it.
Because what the world needs is
people who have come alive.”

– Howard Thurman

Narcolepsy taught me the immediacy of life. I wish I could give this gift to others, but it’s something you must feel in your own bones and pumped through your own veins.

What I can tell you from Dreamworld is this: it’s wondrous. The highs are very high; the lows are very low, yet each time I wake up – I get another chance. Another chance to do something that makes me laugh, cry, smile and roar.

Yes, roar. (They don’t call me “Eye of the Fly-ger” for nothing!) Despite narcolepsy, I’m more alive than ever. So, if you have a dream, begin now.

“What if I fail?”  There are no measures of success or failure here.  Frankly, if  you’re reaching for stars – stars are really far away so buckle up for the long haul, baby!  It’s not an easy path, but it’s never the wrong path.

Don’t ask for approval. Repressed Dreamers lurk everywhere and they’ll try to convince you that your dreams are impossible, just like theirs. Your pursuit threatens them.

Don’t question whether you’re fast enough, good enough, smart enough or strong enough. You’ll find everything you need along the way.  Remember: I never promised easy – I promised wonder and roars.
